image liposuction procedureLiposuction is a common surgical procedure used to remove deposits of excess fat from specific areas of the body. For many people that exercise, there are some localized fat deposits that just can't be reached. Everyone's fat distribution and body shape is genetically determined, meaning that some stubborn fat deposits are nearly impossible to target when losing weight. Both men and women accumulate fat that cannot be easily reduced by a healthy diet and exercise. Localized fat deposits can cause disproportionate contours on the body of a healthy, reasonably fit person. This can be hereditary, and liposuction can safely and effectively remove undesired fat from nearly any area on the body.

Liposuction in Boston

Liposuction, also known as lipoplasty, can remove deposits of excess fat from the hips, thighs, tummy, abdomen, arms, calves, ankles, the face, neck and more. The ideal candidate for the procedure is of normal weight who simply wishes to improve their body shape and contours, not lose weight. They should also have good elasticity in the skin, so that when the fat is removed their skin achieves a smooth appearance rather than a sagging one. Whilst anyone of any age can receive liposuction, those with greater skin elasticity will achieve the best results.

The most common and basic liposuction method removes fat through a small hollow tube known as a cannula. This is passed through the fatty tissue in small skin incisions, and assisted by a powerful vacuum can remove excess fat from targeted areas. As your doctor moves the cannula back and forth through the fat, the vacuum sucks fat out of your body through the tube.

There are various fat removal techniques available. There is the tumescent technique, in which the fat is pre-injected with a solution of salt water, local anesthetic and small amounts of adrenaline. Another type of procedure is the Ultrasound assisted Lipoplasty, UAL. This is a two-step procedure that uses ultra sound waves for energy, and liquefies the fat, which is then suctioned out. Dr. Hall prefers to avoid methods such as internal ultrasound or laser assisted liposuction that destroy the fat cells and can lead to additional scarring and irregularities. Mechanical methods such as power assisted liposuction help to protect and preserve that fat layer that is left behind. There are more techniques available, during your consultation, be sure to ask your doctor for more information about the various fat removal techniques.
